In recent years there has been a shift from using ordinary fossil fuel energy to alternative power sources like geothermal energy. However, fossil fuels are still being widely utilized when compared to alternative sources. There are various differences between these two types of power.

Geothermal energy is power that is obtained by exploiting dry steam or hot water found underneath the surface of the earth. There are 3 types of plants. There are dry steam plants in which pipes are used to bring the steam directly to the plant. There are also flash steam plants and with this type pipes are used to bring hot water to the plants and then steam is created inside the plant.

In a binary cycle plant steam is generated by mixing hot water with some chemicals. This alternative power source has a number of pros and cons. When it comes to the pros, the main one is that it does not pollute the environment. It is a clean source mainly because it does not require fossil fuels to generate it.

The plants as well are friendly to the environment. This source cannot be exhausted and it is mainly due to the fact that heat will always be generated underneath the surface. After the initial costs have been done away with you will not have to worry about paying utility bills, thus saving you money. One of the major drawbacks of this source is that locating a place where you can tap steam and hot water is not easy.

Initial costs are also an issue and harnessing steam can disturb methane deposits underneath the surface which can be released into the atmosphere. On the other hand, fossil fuels are basically made from decayed or decaying plant and animal matter. This dead organic matter takes millions of years to decompose.

We rely on these fuels as they are the primary power source. Many of our possessions rely on this power source in order to function for instance the cars that we drive. Unfortunately fossil fuels cannot be used over and over again like geothermal power.

The fuels are responsible for polluting the environment because a lot of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Coal, oil as well as natural gases are the main types of fuels. Both these sources have their advantages and disadvantages and they are different in so many ways. The major difference is with regards to the impact they both have on our environment. Geothermal power is a clean source whilst fossil fuel power is harmful to the environment.
